Raised in Michigan where entire choirs of summertime frogs sing in bogs beside country roads, I missed the voice of even one frog in the relatively dry land of western Nebraska. After living 14 years in the panhandle, I no longer instinctively listened for this sign of summer.
The 15th spring, however, brought an inordinately heavy rainfall. Usually, earth drank in any moisture that fell. However that summer, the soil had its fill. Ponds stood in wheat fields. Ducks appeared from somewhere to crowd country ditches.
