The spirit of the Lord was upon Jesus at his baptism. He had been sent to give the news to the world of its deliverance from sin and death. Throughout the history of the Christian church ever since, various persons have felt specially anointed and called by God to proclaim the message of salvation in Jesus Christ. Even now we refer to a person's decision to enter the ministry as a "call," saying that one must really feel that God wants one to preach before we will accept that person into ministry. But not all are great prophets of faith and not all are even ordained clergy. That doesn't change the fact that all Christians are called of God to bring good news to those who hurt, to comfort the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom to those bound by sin and evil. The spirit of the Lord is on all who are called by God's name. Our baptism is the seal of our call to ministry. By it our authority to proclaim the good news of the gospel is as great as any clergy or any prophet. Because we have been chosen for this task by God, let us not be afraid to speak out boldly.
