A prophet is a teacher...
Illustration
A prophet is a teacher and a transmitter of truth. The mouthpiece for another, a prophet enters the risk of being totally misunderstood or, in the case of uttering unwelcome truths, the risk of being completely understood. Like a teacher, a prophet can only present. A prophet cannot make another believe. A prophet cannot make another change. At best, a prophet can only offer the truth.
A teacher asked the chosen and beloved Almustafa to speak to them of teaching. And the prophet said:
"No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.
"The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.
"If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind."
(From Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1968, p. 62.)
