The president of the congregation...

The president of the congregation was totally honest with the new pastor. "We are not an easy congregation to serve. The last three pastors left under stressful circumstances. We fired two of them. The other just gave up and resigned. In the past 50 years, one of our pastors left the denomination and two others left the ministry entirely for secular employment.
"Of course, we have just as much trouble with one another as we do with our preachers. Our women's fellowship is the community hotbed of gossip. We asked the men's group to disband. They couldn't hold a meeting without getting in a disagreement. And the choir? Well, some of those folks who like to sing enjoy griping and complaining even more."
The shocked pastor, negotiating for his first church following seminary graduation, asked the most obvious, if not also somewhat naive, question, "I don't understand. Don't the people of this church know that in Christ we are called to love one another?"
"I guess that message hasn't sunk in very well. Mostly we practice a gospel of backbiting, pettiness and anger."
It is not only the Christians of Ephesus who have not heard all of the good news.
