The preacher was reading from the fifth chapter of Galatians about Christ setting us free to serve others. Michelle listened intently. She knew that her new project fit right into this whole idea. She and several others from her college dormitory spent Tuesday afternoons visiting with residents of a convalescent center. After several weeks, Michelle really looked forward to her visits with Wilma and Gladys.
Wilma had been quite helpful since she knew everyone in the place and made a point of introducing the girls to each person.
Gladys liked to tell stories of when she and her husband had operated a soda shop next door to their home. She had a real treasure chest of cherished stories to share with these young college girls.
As Michelle reflected later upon the sermon, she realized that she and her friends were really instruments of freedom in their service. With their weekly visits, they were freeing Wilma, Gladys and the others from loneliness and monotony. They were building caring relationships with those people and that felt pretty good. It was almost like finding extra grandparents to love.
