A pornography shop in Seattle is named The Temple of Venus, alluding to one of the numerous fertility religions in the ancient world. Given the prevalence of sacred prostitution and orgiastic "holy wedding" worship, Paul must have shocked his readers with the admonition, "Glorify God in your body"! How easily those words could have been misunderstood. In our own culture, glorifying of the human body is usually associated with sexuality -- certainly not spirituality. Because of this dichotomy, religious leaders have been hesitant to provide any positive teachings regarding sexual behavior. "There is something about sex that blows the ecclesiastical mind," someone once quipped. Not so for Paul! He draws (as did Jesus) from the model of Adam and Eve before the Fall, teaching that the goal of sexuality is for one man and one woman to "become one flesh," in a spiritual bond that is expressed in sexual and domestic unity and equality.
