Polls indicate that more than 50% of the work force do not enjoy their work. That would
appear to be disastrous and suggests why industries are hard pressed to deal with the high
incidence of absenteeism and job dissatisfaction. Some industries provide psychological
counseling and some have hired chaplains. A generation ago, Richard Bolles wrote an
excellent handbook on the subject of vocational distress titled, What Color Is Your
Parachute? that continues to be the standard on the matter of vocational distresses.
Bolles suggests that there is no reason why people should remain transfixed in work they
do not like. People can change their vocations by pursuing interests more suitable to their
personal gifts. The fact is, however, that most people prefer to remain where they are
mired down, because they figure they know what they have to deal with and what they
must tolerate. They have no idea of what the next situation will be, but they think that if it
is work it can't be all good. To find contentment in one's vocation is a blessing
indeed.
