Please don't shoot the messenger...

Please don't shoot the messenger! We make that plea whenever we have to deliver some bad news.
Need to deliver a less than positive profit report to the boss? Please don't shoot the messenger!
Mailman delivered the past due notices? Please don't shoot the messenger!
Doctor shared the advice that you need to lose thirty pounds? Please don't shoot the messenger!
Drew the short straw at the pastor-parish meeting and need to tell the pastor his sermons are too long? Please don't shoot the messenger!
"Please don't shoot the messenger" is about delivering bad news, but Isaiah's lesson for us today is about the messenger who brings good news. Reflecting on the message of God's salvation, Isaiah realizes that the one who bears the message of God's salvation is truly blessed. Isaiah even says that the good news guy has beautiful feet!
Imagine being the good news guy. You get to take the skyrocketing profit report to the boss, deliver the letter announcing the winner of the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, telling the couple that's been trying so hard to conceive that they're going to have a baby, or being the one on the committee who gets to tell the pastor he's getting a raise. What joy! What a thrill! There's no shooting of the messenger here. Instead, it's all smiles and hugs, and "Why, I could just kiss you!"
There are some practitioners of the faith who make it sound like bad news, full of judgment and the wrath of God, and there are times when we need to hear that kind of word. But the ultimate message from God is one of good news. What a privilege it is to carry the message of peace, good news, and salvation to the entire world with the proclamation from the mountaintops that "Our God reigns!" What a joy to tell people about Jesus and the love of God that is ours in him!
