Pick a person whom you know intimately today. Recall how the relationship began. At first, we learn certain facts about the person: residence, job, education, hobbies, preferences in sports, movies, television programs. Yet, despite all the factual information, we know the person from a distance. We remain an acquaintance. We have only surface knowledge. Then, one day, for whatever reason, we take the risk of revealing some inner feelings, perhaps of fear, shame, guilt, joy, anger, confusion, sadness; and the other responds in similar ways. For the first time, we know the other. We become intimates. We no longer dance around each other; we dance with each other. -- Keller
