Peter Holmes' neighbor had a vicious dog. Many times Peter had asked his neighbor to keep it tied, but his neighbor refused. One day the dog attacked and killed Peter's two-year-old daughter. The sheriff shot the dog and arrested the neighbor, but the neighbor never spent a day in jail. As a result, the people in that small country community shunned the neighbor; nobody would talk to him or even trade goods with him.
The next spring when the neighbor plowed his field, no one would sell him any seed and so his fields lay fallow. Then one night, Peter arose from his bed, jumped on his tractor, and went out and planted his neighbor's fields. News of this event spread like wildfire. The pastor came out to see Peter and asked him why.
Peter said, "When I went past the church the other day I heard the congregation singing and their song reminded me of happier days. I went to plant corn in my enemy's field so that God might exist in my life once more and I might be alive again."
