This pericope points up two arresting questions: Why are you afraid? Where is your faith? In these Jesus touches a sensitive nerve in our human nature: fear. Victor Hugo's trilogy of novels are like mirrors in which we see ourselves. The Toilers of the Sea directs attention to our fear of nature; Les Miserables, our fear of society; and Notre Dame de Paris, our fear of God. Over against the turmoil caused by these fears, Jesus says, "It is I, be not afraid!" Nature? For him it is not hostile towards us; rather our use of it determines its positive helpfulness. Society?
