Emphasis Preaching Journal
Perhaps for the first time...

Perhaps for the first time we realize in this text that the same Saul who had been occupied with imprisoning Christians was himself really the captive. Richard Lovelace's lines come to mind: "Stone walls do not a prison make, Nor iron bars a cage."
The Apostle Paul's life and ministry has been described as like a great river -- sometimes surging through narrow passes; sometimes quietly flowing in the plain; but always moving without stopping, onward to the sea. His early preaching was much like the roaring rapids of a river that will not be bound.
