The people were -- and are -- rich in hope. These people have longed for freedom. And they were supported in their struggle for freedom in the 1980s and early 1990s by multinational corporations, churches and individuals around the world. Mandela inspired the black South Africans to hang on (just as he was hanging on through brutal beatings during decades of imprisonment), but the time had come for a change. The majority of the people wanted Mandela released from prison, and they wanted apartheid, the dividing wall of fear and mistrust and ignorance, to come down -- but they couldn't vote.
