Paul's words remind us that it is possible to be quite religious and yet not have faith. In The Meaning of Faith, Harry Emerson Fosdick noted that "one of the most distinguishing characteristics of the so-called 'Age of Faith' was its lack of faith. It lived in a static world; it was poor in possibilities except in heaven; it pitiably lacked those most certain signs of vital faith, the open mind eager for new truth and the ardent, vigorous life seeking new conquests.
