Paul is speaking of the gracious life of grace made possible through Christ. It is a life free of fear, a life that not only survives, but also thrives! There is a story about a little boy who was greatly concerned that ants might get onto the screened porch where his cat had her litter of kittens. To repel the ants, he poured a ring of gasoline around himself and the kittens. Tragically, a pilot light from the nearby hot-water heater ignited the gasoline, killing the child and the kittens. It is easy for us to build up fears about things that might be "out there." There were no ants to threaten the little boy, and we, too, often exaggerate problems and magnify dangers. We experience an inner death from paralysis when fear controls our lives. We ring ourselves for ruin when we allow the "ants" of life to dominate. What joy to trust the gracious gift of righteousness and joy that reign through the life of Christ!
