Paul chooses strong and vivid words to picture the heathen way of life: "Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more." And he further pictures this as a result of "the hardening of their hearts."
In the Greek language, Paul‚--ôs image is even more forceful. The word he uses indicates the "petrifying" of their hearts. Porosis comes from "poros," which originally meant a stone that was harder than marble.
