This passage may well be the greatest and most vivid description of how the Son of God humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. While no human analogy can ever fully convey the meaning of our Lord's Incarnation and his suffering death on the cross, I have always been helped in my own understanding by the true story of Thomas Mott Osborne. On a wintry day in 1913 in Auburn, New York, a new group of prisoners was processed and taken to cells in the State Prison. Among them was a rather fine-looking man named Tom Brown.
