This passage about confessing our sins often evokes criticisms such as, "What good does it do to confess, if you just go out and sin again?" In Alcoholics Anonymous, new members are often given jobs within the local chapter as added incentive for these newcomers to continue attending AA meetings. In one Seattle group a new member was given the job of treasurer, but he then took the chapter's money and used it to get drunk. Afterward, he ashamedly admitted his crime. The group told him that he was still their treasurer. Once again he took the money and got drunk. Once again they made him treasurer, and once more he repeated his offense. When he confessed yet again, the other members told him, "We are going to keep making you treasurer until you learn to do it right." Later this man explained that he had so much guilt, he just had to get sober.
