A part of our preparation...

A part of our preparation for Christmas should include a word of joy. Some of you have been challenged to memorize scripture passages. In a home where it was a family tradition to memorize a weekly passage and recite it before the rest of the family, the verse, "Jesus wept," was a favorite because of its brevity. It is known as the shortest verse in the Bible. Then one day, the scholar of the family discovered that there was a shorter verse in the Greek language of the New Testament. First Thessalonians 5:16 has only two words, "Rejoice evermore," while John 5:16 in the Greek has three words.
Weeping certainly has its place. But we will surely attract more to the Christian way with love, joy, peace, faith, and hope. And there is a connection between the two verses. The basis for our rejoicing is that we have a loving, sympathetic companion who understands our weaknesses and failures, who even cries over our brokenness, pain, and trouble. Rejoice evermore!
