One day a mother became exasperated with her five-year-old daughter, as all mothers do from time to time. Her daughter had ripped her dress while playing. In an unthinking flurry of anger the mother ordered her daughter to go to the bedroom and sew up her dress. Well, this was a foolish request to make of a young lady who had never held a needle, but the mother did not think of that. She was asking the impossible.
We need models to learn and grow. We need to imitate the best we see. Paul did not say to the new Christians at Corinth, "Imitate Christ." That would be a confusing and almost impossible way to begin to know the Lord. He said, "Be imitators of me." Mature Christians are models for those whose lives are torn. Having received mercy they show mercy. They teach how to heal, repair, and love. Through them we hear Christ's "Follow me."
