In our text we find Moses giving a last address to his people before entering the Promised Land. He tells them that Yahweh will bring forth a prophet to replace him. God has brought forth prophets at various times in our current history. Today we would probably call them distinguished leaders.
One such leader was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. After completing his academic training, which included graduate study at Boston and Harvard Universities, he gave his talents to help people. While he was especially interested in raising the strata of life for those of his race, he was concerned about the poor of every nationality. When it was not popular to speak out against our government spending money for armaments, instead of raising benefits for the poor in the midst of the Vietnam War, he stood his ground.
In Martin Luther King, Jr., God raised up a prophet for peace. When he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, he said in his acceptance speech: "After contemplation I conclude that this award ... is a profound recognition that non-violence is the answer to the crucial political and racial questions of our time -- the need for man to overcome oppression without resorting to violence."
Let us pray that God will raise up another "prophet for peace" soon.
