Our society stresses the intellectual, scientific pursuit of knowledge. Yet to know God is to have faith -- a faith in a revealed truth -- a bestowed knowledge -- an uncovered mystery. It is through the God-given gift of faith that we "know" God.
St. Augustine addressed the question of what comes first, knowledge or faith. He put it this way to his hearers: "Of course the reason for my speaking now is so that those who do not believe may come to believe ... Thus there is a certain amount of truth in the words: Let me understand that I may believe. And yet I say as does the Prophet: Believe that you may understand. We both speak the truth, so let us agree. Understand that you may believe and believe that you may understand. I shall state briefly how we may settle without dispute: Understand my words that you may believe and believe the Word of God that you may understand."
