In one play about Joan of Arc the wicked judges plan a trap for her: "Let's ask her if she's in a state of grace! If she says she isn't, she has condemned herself. If she says she is, she has damned herself by her presumptiveness."
So she is called in and the question is put. Without a moment's hesitation, she declares, "If I am not in a state of grace, then may God help me. If I am, then may God be praised."
