One of the objections that the young Martin Luther made over having the Book of Revelation at all is that it didn't seem to him to have any idea of the theology of the cross but instead was given to triumphalism and seemed to be judgmental instead of gracious. Luther thought that revelation didn't serve the love of God for the world but instead fed the idea of a wrathful God who delighted in grotesque punishments.
