One of the most recurring themes throughout the Old and the New Testaments is that God can change barrenness into fruitfulness. On November 14, 1963, off the coast of Iceland, Captain Gudmar Thomasson was in his boat when seemingly the sea began to "boil." Accompanying this percolation was steam and thick, black clouds of smoke. When the mist and clouds receded, there appeared a volcanic island that grew for several weeks. The island was one and three-tenths miles long and was named Surtsey after a Norse giant of mythology.
