One of the most influential Christian clergymen in the United States, (Rev. Jerry Falwell) called the most influential Christian clergymen in the Union of South Africa (Bishop Desmond Tutu) a "phony." Falwell later attempted to qualify his remark and even to make a gesture in the direction of apology. But the damage had already been done. The world had already witnessed the unseemly specter of one Christian leader impugning the integrity and character of another. Not just disagreeing. But questioning the very sincerity of the other. The world had also seen America's best-known televangelist defending a racist system of government (apartheid) that is anathema to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
What a sorry advertisement for Christianity! How sad must be the Lord who prayed, in our text, that his followers "may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou has sent me and has loved them even as thou hast loved me." (John 17:23) When will Christians stop bad-mouthing other Christians who believe differently? When will Christians realize mean-spirited attacks on other Christians are repulsive to a watching world? When will followers of Jesus realize ugly diversions in their ranks become major obstacles to those who might otherwise be drawn to our Lord?
