One discussion in today's medical community surrounds the benefits of therapeutic touch. Though results are inconclusive, there are a couple of benefits cited in studies conducted at universities including therapeutic touch in their nursing curriculum. In 1994, at the University of Alabama Birmingham's burn center, patients were assessed using both the McGill Pain Rating Scale and the Visual Analogue Scale. The McGill Scale results indicated that though actual pain may not have decreased, the patient's perception frequently was that pain had lessened.
