This Old Testament Lesson has obviously been chosen to fit a Trinitarian theme. (It is also an alternate in Cycle B of the Episcopal Lectionary, but seldom used.)
Here in Transjordan, in the land given to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and some of Manasseh, Moses (see vv. 41ff.) ends his first teaching to the people of Israel and summarizes how good and great God has been to them in leading them out of bondage and into the Promised Land. Therefore, out of gratitude, they have a duty to respond to his covenant and commands.
