An old fable tells of Jesus stepping into human history to be born in Bethlehem. As he passes through the last gate of Heaven, Gabriel stops him with the question: "Why are you going?" He answers: "Because my Father loves the world so much that He wants the world to be redeemed." Unable to turn Jesus from his mission, Gabriel watches and waits while the months become years. Finally, after 33 years, Gabriel sees Jesus returning to Heaven and greets him: "Lord, what happened to you? Why the scars? And the world you went to save, did you save it, Lord?" Jesus replies: "I saved only a handful of people, but I did so by these wounds." The angel protests: "But what about the rest of humanity?" And Jesus answers: "If the rest are ever saved, they will be saved by these same wounds, for there is no other way."
