"Now in this same district there were shepherds out in the fields, keeping watch through the night over their flock" (Luke 2:8). Christmas reminds us of "the Glory of the Old Grind." There is the glory of revelation. Throughout the scriptures, the people whom the mystery of God enlightened were at their daily work. Moses was shepherding near Mount Sinai. The shepherds were at work near Bethlehem when the revelation came on that first Christmas. Christ's first disciples were commercial fishermen who worked Lake Galilee. There is the glory of routine.
