Novelist Christopher Isherwood wrote his semi--autobiographical Berlin Stories not long after leaving Berlin for America in 1939. The novel became familiar in America under the title I Am a Camera, and it became famous as the stage and movie production, Cabaret. In recent years, Isherwood has written an extensive set of memoirs in which he gives a look behind the scenes of the novel, revealing some of the facets of the stories that were either disguised or omitted in the original version, including the role played by his friend, W. H. Auden, the poet.
