Nothing captures the wonder of birth anymore than a scene from an old Bill Cosby show.
Bill was trying to help a woman about to give birth. This woman and her two children
were stranded with Bill in a terrific rainstorm, which had knocked out the telephone and
the lights. The woman told Bill she had her other two children by natural childbirth and
he had nothing to worry about, but Bill did not hear what she said. He was determined to
be helpful. He offered to boil some water and she just shook her head. He tried to smile at
the woman in labor but ended up with a ridiculously helpless look on his face.
The mother survived; the baby came. Bill, thrilled by the wonder if it all, walked out into the rain and with a voice colored with many meanings began to yell over and over: "A baby! A baby! A baby." Hannah must have felt much like this when she learned that God had answered her prayer and she was to have a son.
