Never be disturbed by honest doubts. The person who never raises a question about God's goodness and the prevalence of evil has never had deep experiences or profound thoughts. We live in a world that compels us to ask questions and to seek proof. Often, the most calm and confident life is lived by persons who went through periods of spiritual upheaval which stirred their souls and tested the depth of their faith. A knife blade that stays sharp has been hardened by processing through fire. Similarly, a faith that has been tested and has survived the test is strong. Doubt is not sin, because, by overcoming it, we strengthen faith and gain courage. A ship is not regarded as safe until it has made a long, shakedown cruise under difficult conditions. After it has been tossed by the waves, battered by storms, and buffeted by winds, it can receive its certificate of seaworthiness. And so it is with our souls! "There lives more faith in honest doubt, believe me, than in half the creeds" wrote Tennyson.
