Nels Wickstrom and Anna Steel...
Illustration
Nels Wickstrom and Anna Steel, both natives of Sweden, were married in Florence County, Wisconsin in about 1880. There they homesteaded, as it was called. If a man could take the wilderness, turn it into a home and make a living from it for a stated number of years, the land became his own. Nels Wickstrom had done so with 120 acres and lived in his log cabin. His small and growing number of lifestock were housed in other log buildings close by. Huge parts of continental United States were domesticated in this manner.
