The natural world is filled with flattering and sometimes effectively convincing mimicry. A case in point is the remarkable similarity between two sovereign creatures among the butterflies: the monarch and the viceroy. Beautifully patterned in black veins upon a deep orange background, the wings of the two species of butterfly are differentiated principally by a small black line across each hind wing of the viceroy.
