Natural scientist Aldo Leopold once studied the inter-relationships of rabbits, lady-slippers, deer and grouse in the Wisconsin woods. What he discovered in the years between 1932 and 1935 was that rabbits were particularly abundant. They ate the little bog-birch bush which actually hurt the deer and grouse population which depended upon the same food.
In addition, the profusion of rabbits affected the lady-slipper population in a more positive way. As the bog-birches were eaten, more sunlight reached the lady-slippers and they blossomed with the increased sunlight.
