My husband and I were attending the annual Christmas program put on by our community's symphony orchestra. The excitement in the air was thick and the noise was deafening. Soon the symphony concert would begin, but until then, chaos seemed to rule. The percussionists beat their drums and clanged their cymbals. The string players tuned their instruments and the brass and woodwind players ran up and down the scales as they flexed their fingers and relaxed their jaws. Above it all was the sound of conversation and laughter as members of the audience visited with one another.
And then it happened. The conductor strode onto the stage and up to the podium. Without missing a beat he picked up his baton and tapped his music stand for attention. Silence fell upon the hall. He raised his hands, uniting audience and orchestra together as they waited for the opening song. "Joy to the world, the Lord is come."
