In my early years at the Hollywood church, some young men planted a small tree at the west end of the building. The tree grew and became a nice source of shade. As it continued growing, the tree's roots began to threaten the building's foundation so someone ordered it cut down. No one removed the stump, though. In a few more years that tree reasserted itself from a shoot that began from the severed trunk.
In Isaiah's time, Jesse's youngest son, King David, had been in the grave for centuries. Folks still visited David's tomb in Jesus' time. They grieved that no king like David had reappeared in Israel to reintroduce the splendor that they thought was their greatest hour. They saw only a stump.
Too bad they didn't recognize the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and might, of knowledge and the fear of the Lord that Jesus brought. But neither do many modern people comprehend that Jesus personifies these qualities. His dwelling will be glorious. Acknowledge him today so you can participate and enjoy it.
