A moving van pulled up in front of the gate of an upper-class section of a large Midwestern city. Several hours later, one of the individuals who lived across the street, greeted the new resident with a freshly baked pie.
"You are going to love living in this community," said the neighbor. "Everybody is so friendly. We all keep our property up, have block parties and watch out for each other."
The lady standing by the moving van said, "We have lived here for five years. We are moving out."
Our society just moves too fast. As the technology billionaires have multiplied, so have the poor and uneducated. Society is not paying as much attention to being a good neighbor because it is so difficult to keep up with our own lives.
In Parables of Jesus, George Buttrick said, "Fundamental neighborliness is a barometer of the soul, an indication of the attitude of one's heart...."
