Mount Mitchell, North Carolina, was the destination. Reputed to be the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, breathtaking views reward thousands of sightseers who ascend to the famous summit. The flat-landers, not privy to mountain mist, wound their way, early in the morning to the highest point in order to survey the much heralded view. To their dismay, the arrival was marked by a most unspectacular obscurity created by the early morning mist. No small amount of squinting was required in order to see even the other side of the parking lot.
