The mother, a widow in meager circumstances, worked long and hard to provide for her daughter and save for her education. She wore one shabby winter coat year in and year out. The daughter was a bit ashamed of her mother's worn coat when out in public with her. One day, on the street car as she was looking at her mother who had to sit across from her, she saw her mother in a new way and wordlessly understood the meaning of that worn coat.
