Most of us will never...

Most of us will never forget the scenes from Desert Storm which we saw on television. It was hard to believe that one could actually watch the bombing of Bagdad as it was taking place. Fortunately, we were spared some of the gruesome scenes of killing and pillage.
There is one picture which stands out in my mind, and one which I will never forget. It is that of an Iraqi soldier who has just surrendered to an Amencan GI. It is quite evident that the enemy soldier is not only exhausted, but is quite dehydrated from the hot sun. The American has taken his canteen of water and offered it to the Iraqi, who is drinking it as though his very life depended upon it, and it probably did!
Jesus indicated that to give a cup of cold water to one in need is to give it to him. It is also one way of putting faith into action. It is easy to give a cup of water to a friend, or neighbor, but to give it to an enemy requires Christian compassion. The American GI could have talked to the Iraqi about the Christian faith, but it would have meant very little without the expression of love in his simple deed.
