Most people who have completed a Ph.D. tell horror stories about the process. Jim was no different. As he explains it: "I sent the first few sample chapters to the chairperson of my committee. She returned them with so many red marks I could barely identify my original typed words on the page.
"She included an angry letter. Basically, she told me that I was too verbose; my grammar was atrocious; my spelling barely acceptable for a high school graduate, let alone a person moving toward a doctorate.
I made an appointment to talk with her. As I had done several times in my educational career, I told her of the poor quality schools I had attended and the inadequate English instructors who dotted my journey. I was not a good speller, I admitted. I told her I was sorry for my inadequacies, but that was just me.
"Rather than sympathy, I was told that was so much nonsense. She told me I was responsible to get my act together, spell correctly and punctuate properly. The message was clear. 'It is no big deal. You have the ability. Just do it!' "
This passage of scripture has the same message. The command of the Lord is not too difficult for you. Believe you can do it and then just do it!
