Most Jewish couples hoped they could be the parents of the Messiah. What an honor that
God should pick them to bring his chosen one into the world. If Joseph and Mary ever
talked about the possibility, they must have later wondered whether parenting the special
child was worth the danger and uncertainty that came with it.
Mary faced the fearful prospect of motherhood prior to marriage. Joseph dealt with the dilemma of accepting a pregnant fiancée whose child wasn't his. Next, King Herod tried to murder their baby son. Then the couple was forced to quickly travel to a foreign country. Even after Herod died, and an angel informed them that it was to safe return, they feared Herod's son, Archelaus, who then ruled southern Israel. That's why they chose to live in Nazareth.
Two different things impress us. One, as Matthew noted, the Old Testament prophets predicted all of these events. Second, association with Jesus can be a high-risk venture and we need to be prepared to face it. Are you ready for the challenge?
