As modern-day readers of Israel's history, we sometimes wonder at the apparent ease and rapidity by which these ancient nomads violated the many covenants they had made with God. "All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient," the people said. Yet, when hunger, fear, greed, or lust became too persuasive, the covenant was forgotten and disobedience reigned.
We should not be too judgmental of the ancient Israelis, however, because we latter-day religionists are often just as guilty of covenant breaking. Do we not make covenants with God each time we are baptized, seek repentance, make confession, or offer up our prayers? And do we not break these covenants each time we succumb to the temptations of our present world?
Yet, even in our weaknesses, we should continue to make our confessionals and our covenants, because perseverance often leads to victory and God is long-suffering toward his children.
"It is the duty of nations as well as of man to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon."
(Abraham Lincoln)
