At a ministers' conference two years ago, former United Methodist Bishop, James Armstrong, stressed one point. The point was that we are all called to be "peace makers." Then he went on to explain that this did not mean "peace keepers." Most of us keep the peace. Many do it simply out of fear of jail if they break the law. "Maker" implies something active, aggressive.
Recently, a phrase, "Peace with Justice," has been tossed around. Justice means that the big guy doesn't push the little guy around. Justice means being active, aggressive -- about doing what is right. Names like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. stand out among those who have been aggressive both for peace and for justice.
However, the greatest "Peace Maker" and the greatest "Justice Maker" of all time has been the One we call Lord. Isaiah sees a future glimpse of how God will make justice in the world. God became aggressive about nineteen hundred and eighty-some years back. It's time we joined his program.
