A member of our congregation served as an aircraft-based fighter pilot during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Once when discussing this passage and others commending Christian "readiness," he commented on the necessity of readiness for aircraft carrier pilots during wartime.
There is a special room on the ship called the "ready room." In this area pilots who are dressed and ready for flight are retained on 24-hour basis in the event of an enemy attack. By having aircrew ready to respond, the risk of unopposed enemy attack is diminished and the safety of the vessel is enhanced.
