This is a scripture that is very often used at funeral services. And it is a comforting word for those times. It is wonderful to know that because of Christ's resurrection, death can no longer overpower us. There is great peace in knowing that, because of the God who has been revealed in history, nothing to come, in this life or beyond it, can overcome us. But sometimes it is not death that most seems to separate us from God, but life itself. Sometimes the daily grind of coping with a seemingly endless variety of petty frustrations can come much nearer to making us forget God than the more traumatic events. At a time of crisis, God comes to our consciousness. There may be strong and even negative feelings that we need to express to God in those times but we are not likely to forget about God. But in the "things present" of life, it is so easy not to include God in our planning for and assessment of the things that daily sap our spiritual strength. Therefore it is important to realize that God is available to us in the midst of trivia as well as crisis.
