Maybe we can take our cue from Moses in this lesson. There are times when the people with whom we minister or the people we serve are clearly disobeying God. They may not have golden calves, but CD's, bonds, money markets, and stocks occupy their time. The gods of today may not be as visible, but prestige, abilities, and time may be the gods of the "stiff-necked people" today.
The lesson we can learn from Moses is in his response --though he was angry and justifiably irate and could see the sins of the people --he did not ask God to punish or destroy them. He prayed for them. Moses' intercession was for these lawbreakers and idol makers.
Let's pray for God's mercy on those of us who worship the idols of MX missiles, Trident submarines, or other "golden calves." Let's pray for God's mercy on those of us who believe in the power of financial stability. Let's pray for God's mercy on those of us who turn to alcohol or drugs for our comfort. Let's pray for God's mercy on those of us who believe that by our own bootstraps we'll be saved.
Moses prayed for the people.
