For many years, Irvin has had a garden in his backyard. His wife will tell you that every
year it magically seems to increase in size. Each spring Irvin begins working in the
garden, tilling the soil, and later planting vegetables. He has shared his love of gardening
with different groups in the community, including his church. Anyone who appears the
least bit interested is invited to come and check out his garden. Throughout the summer,
people will come to check out his garden and frequently see Irvin at his best. He certainly
takes pride in his garden.
By the end of the summer, Irvin gives away tomatoes, corn, green beans, and other vegetables to just about everyone he meets. By August, he places a table out by the road with his vegetables with a note that anyone who would like to take anything from the table is welcome to do so free of charge. Irvin is generous like that.
What surprised Irvin was that through his garden he became friendly with many of his neighbors. And the better he knew them, the more comfortable he was in sharing his faith with them. Some of his neighbors have begun attending church.
